I've been handling PPE and FR workwear orders for 9 years. I've personally made (and documented) 11 significant ordering mistakes, totaling roughly $11,400 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's pre-order checklist so the next person doesn't repeat them.
This isn't a brand pitch. It's three head-to-head comparisons that keep showing up in my inbox, and I'm judging each one against the same three questions:
- Does it hold up on day one, out of the box?
- Does it hold up on day 90, after laundering and real abuse?
- Does it hold up on the day something goes wrong, or the day the auditor asks for documentation?
Comfort and price matter, but they're downstream of those three. Let's go.
Comparison 1: Safety Glasses vs Safety Goggles
I used to think goggles were simply the upgrade. More coverage, sealed edges, higher price — obviously better, right? That assumption cost me a lot of goodwill in 2018.
The honest comparison comes down to hazard matching, not protection level. Glasses with side shields handle impact — grinding, chipping, cutting, overhead work. Goggles handle the hazards glasses can't seal against: chemical splash, fine dust, and airborne particles that find the gap between lens and cheek.
What the markings actually tell you
Under ANSI/ISEA Z87.1, the marking on the lens is the whole story. A Z87+ mark means high-velocity impact. Then you get hazard suffixes: D3 for splash and droplet, D4 for dust, D5 for fine dust. If you buy goggles for a dusty shop and the lens is marked Z87+ with no D4 or D5, you paid a premium for a seal that isn't rated for the thing you bought it for. We did exactly that on a 60-pair order in 2018.
The failure mode nobody puts on the spec sheet
Here's the part that doesn't show up in a comparison chart: sealed eyewear fogs, and fogged eyewear comes off. A veteran crew lead told me back in 2018 that the best eye protection is the pair that stays on somebody's face. I ignored him, bought 60 pairs of sealed goggles with no anti-fog coating, and within two weeks I had a stack of them sitting on hard hats and a pile of near-miss write-ups about eye protection not being worn. Not one of those write-ups said the goggles failed. They said the goggles were uncomfortable and the wearer couldn't see.

The most frustrating part of that whole lesson: it wasn't a product quality problem. It was a fit-and-comfort problem, which is a procurement problem, and I owned it.
So, direct conclusion: goggles aren't the premium version of glasses. They're a different tool. For general impact work, buy quality Z87+ glasses with side shields — our last order ran about $6.40 per pair, and compliance was better than anything else we've tried. For chemical handling or fine dust, buy goggles and buy the D3/D4/D5 rating you actually need, plus anti-fog, even though it cost us around $21 a pair on the same order.
Comparison 2: FR Jeans vs Regular Denim
Everyone compares these on price tag. That's the wrong axis. Compare them on what happens in the two seconds after an arc flash.
Arc-rated is not the same as flame-resistant
This is the distinction that trips people up. ASTM F1506 is the standard that covers arc-rated clothing for electrical workers, and NFPA 70E is what drives how much arc rating your task requires. The rating itself is expressed in cal/cm² — the ATPV number you'll see on the label. Regular denim doesn't have one. Not a low number, not an untested number — no arc rating, because nobody tested it for that.
Plain cotton denim will char and can ignite under arc exposure, and the fabric you're wearing underneath matters as much as the outer layer. That's why arc-rated programs ban synthetic base layers under FR outers: polyester melts onto skin. I've had to send people home to change because of a moisture-wicking shirt. I'd rather do that than explain a burn.
Where the real cost hides
FR jeans, including the Bulwark FR jeans we run for crews doing energized work, cost roughly 2.5 to 3 times what a standard pair of work denim does. And I'll be straight with you: they don't last three times as long. Cost per wear is worse, not better. FR denim is an insurance policy that happens to be mandated for certain tasks — not a cost-saving move. If a vendor tells you FR denim saves you money over regular denim, ask them to show the math.
The genuinely expensive part isn't the garment, it's the laundry and the repairs:
- Fabric softener and dryer sheets leave a residue that our laundry program's own spec sheet flags as a performance risk. We banned them outright.
- Treated FR cotton has a documented laundering limit that our program tracks by wash cycle. Inherently FR fabrics like aramid don't carry that limit — they last the life of the garment.
- Repairs have to use FR thread and FR patches. In Q1 2024 a crew used a standard patch kit with polyester thread on 12 pairs of FR pants. That voids the rating. We replaced all 12 — about $1,100 plus the time, and we were lucky the auditor didn't see it first.
One more honest note, since people ask: when you're weighing Bulwark against Carhartt coveralls or another name brand, both make legitimate FR lines. The brand loyalty question is a distraction. The deciding factors are the arc rating printed on the spec sheet, whether your sizes are actually in stock, and whether your laundry program can handle the fabric. Ask for the test documentation — under FTC rules on advertising claims, safety claims have to be substantiated, so the paperwork is yours to request.
Comparison 3: Quoted Lead Time vs Guaranteed Ship Date
This is the comparison I got wrong most recently, and it's the one that hurts the most because it looks like a bargain right up until it isn't.
First, the size chart problem
Half the reorders I've ever processed trace back to sizing, and coveralls are the worst offender. A Bulwark coverall size chart is not transferable to another brand's chart — the height ranges and chest-to-waist ratios don't map. Three things I now insist on:
Measure over the base layers the person will actually wear in the field, not over a t-shirt in a break room. Pay more attention to the height range than the numeric size, because coveralls fit or fail on torso length. And order one sample before you commit to 40 units, especially if you're adding name badges, because customized garments usually aren't returnable.
Same logic, worse consequences with footwear. New hires had asked for Georgia work boots, and the specific model and width they wanted was backordered five weeks. We substituted a different boot to hit the start date. Half the crew had fit issues, we processed a pile of exchanges, and a boot that doesn't fit isn't just uncomfortable — it's a trip and slip hazard on a plant floor. Boots need break-in time, so sizing risk and lead time risk stack on top of each other.
What the certainty premium actually bought
In Q1 2024 we needed coveralls for a scheduled maintenance shutdown. Two quotes came back: $8,600 with a lead time of approximately 3 to 4 weeks, and $9,200 with a scheduled ship date in writing. I took the cheaper one and saved $600.
The order landed in week six. The shutdown date didn't move. We paid roughly $4,100 in expedited air freight on partial quantities, short-term rental garments, and overtime to cover the first two days.
So we saved $600 and spent $4,100 to work around it. That's the whole argument in one line: the expedite fee didn't buy us speed, it bought us a commitment. And a commitment is what you're actually purchasing when a deadline is fixed by a shutdown schedule, an audit date, or a start date you can't move.
After getting burned twice by probably-on-time promises, I ask one question on every quote: is that a ship date or an estimate, and what happens if you miss it? If the answer is vague, the price difference isn't real.
How to Decide
There's no universal winner in any of these three comparisons. It depends on your scenario:
- General impact work (grinding, chipping, overhead): Z87+ safety glasses with side shields. Goggles here get removed.
- Chemical splash or fine dust: goggles with the correct D3, D4, or D5 marking, and anti-fog. Don't substitute glasses.
- Any energized work or a task that could be reclassified: arc-rated FR with the rating your hazard analysis calls for. Never plain denim. Never synthetic base layers underneath.
- Fixed deadline (shutdown, audit, start date): pay for the guaranteed ship date, order a sample size first, and put the commitment in writing.
- Flexible timing with spare stock on the shelf: take the cheaper quote. This is the one scenario where saving the $600 is actually the right call.
We've caught 47 potential ordering errors with our pre-check list in the past 18 months. Almost all of them fell into one of these three buckets. The pattern is consistent: the cheap option is only cheap when nothing goes wrong, and in this line of work, something always goes wrong eventually.
