I Bought Cheap FR Hoodies Over Bulwark. An Arc Flash Showed Me the Difference

“Flame resistant” only tells you a fabric will self-extinguish after a small flame is removed. For someone working around live electrical equipment, the real question is whether the fabric can survive an arc flash without breaking open—or worse, melting onto the skin.

That’s why NFPA 70E separates arc flash PPE into categories. A garment labeled CAT 2 should have an arc rating of at least 8 cal/cm². If no one can show you that number in writing, and if the label doesn’t name a test standard such as ASTM F1506 or report an ATPV/EBT value, then you are not buying CAT 2 clothing. You are buying hope.

The other acronym that causes confusion is NFPA 2112. That standard covers flash fire protection, not arc flash. A garment can pass NFPA 2112 and still be wrong for electrical work.
