There’s No One ‘Best’ FR Garment — Here’s How to Find Yours
When I first started reviewing PPE specs, I assumed the highest arc rating was always the right call. Three years and one rejected batch later, I learned that the best flame resistant clothing depends entirely on your work environment, your risk category, and — honestly — your vendor’s consistency. Scenario 1: High Arc Flash Risk (Electricians, Utility Workers)
You need an arc rating that matches your incident energy analysis — usually Category 2 (8 cal/cm²) or above. Choose a lighter FR jean or shirt that still meets ASTM F1506 but doesn’t have a heavy CAT 3 rating you’ll never use.

How to Decide Which Scenario You’re In

- Do you work on energized equipment where an arc flash incident is possible? → Scenario 1.
- Is your site classified for combustible gas or flammable liquids (e.g., refinery, pipeline)? → Scenario 2.
- Do you mainly walk through a plant but rarely enter hazardous zones? → Scenario 3.
If you’re still fuzzy, ask your safety officer for the incident energy analysis or the flash fire hazard assessment. That document will give you a “category” or “cal/cm²” number. Then match that number to the garment’s arc rating (ATPV or EBT) — and always add a margin of safety. The numbers said a 6.5 cal rating was enough for my client; my gut said go with 8.0 because of potential calibration drift. One Final Note on Transparency and Trust
