Type 2 includes protection from lateral or angled impact. A safety helmet usually adds a chin strap as well, which matters in a fall because a hard hat without a strap can leave the head before the worker reaches the ground.

So is a safety helmet always better? No. If a worker is standing under an overhead conveyor and the only realistic risk is falling items, a Type 1 hard hat can be exactly right. My objection is deciding without the hazard assessment. I've audited facilities where arc-rated face shields were added but head protection was still selected because that's the style we have always worn. That's a risk gap, not a tradition worth defending.

A garment with both can be an elegant way to cover two hazard review lines. But elegance doesn't survive poor maintenance, improper sizing or unapproved repairs. My audit trail has to show every one of those pieces.

When I first started inspecting FR products, I assumed flame resistant was a yes/no property of the fabric. I was wrong. The test report can say the outer fabric passes while the zipper tape or pocket material hasn't been evaluated for that specific configuration. The label is a summary, not the evidence. For boots, the relevant footwear standard is ASTM F2413. It isn't enough that a boot looks heavy duty. The toe must withstand impact and compression when marked accordingly, and some models add protection for puncture, electrical hazard or conductive environments. If a vendor submits a Reebok work boot, I don't assume it is right simply because the brand is recognized. I ask whether that specific SKU's markings line up with the floor conditions, load weights and electrical risks in the facility. For safety glasses, the baseline is ANSI Z87.1. Impact-rated lenses should carry the manufacturer mark and the Z87 impact level. I have a problem with unmarked plastic sold as if the marketing copy would stop a fragment. If the eyewear is comfortable enough to stay on, compliance goes up. Wear time is a safety feature.

Objection: we have always bought head protection that way

I understand the resistance. Swapping workers from a traditional hard hat to a safety helmet can change inventory codes, accessory mounts and even cleaning procedures. Moving from a generic FR shirt to a multi-standard coverall can cost more upfront. I'm not asking anyone to ignore budget or user comfort. I'm asking for a decision that aligns with the documented hazard before the cost conversation starts.

The basics of PPE haven't changed in my time in this role: know the hazard, select the right protection, train the worker and maintain the gear. But the execution has transformed.
